This piece came about from reading my horoscope in the paper one day which said I should get off my persecution complex. I thought, 'Yeah, I feel picked on sometimes'. Every time I thought about what it said, this image kept popping into my mind, so I decided to create it in bronze.
While I was creating this piece, I hit terror regarding religious upbringing. Although it hadn't started as a religious statement, I was terrified I was going to be punished or struck by lightning for using this symbology. It was a very powerful piece for me.
'Release' was accepted into the California State Fair and they wanted a statement about it: "This piece is about getting out of the victim role. Getting out of that role can be painful before it gets better - just like the hammer has to press on the fingers in order to get the leveragae to pull out the stake. The base represents the fears we get stuck in, the stake represents guilt and shame, the hand is our beliefs about ourselves and life in general and the hammer represents the truth and self-realizations which can release us from our own misconceptions."
I was surprised with what had flowed from 'nowhere' about its meaning.
